Dead rodent removal in Plano

You'll know it when you smell it. A sweet, heavy, rotten odor that's strongest in one room or one closet, and gets worse on hot afternoons. In a Plano house it's often a rodent that died in the attic, a wall cavity or the space above a ceiling after someone put out poison.

The smell fades on its own eventually, but that can take weeks, and in a Texas summer attic it can be miserable. Removal means finding the carcass, getting it out, cleaning the spot and dealing with flies. Fixr lists dead rat removal at roughly $150 to $250 nationally.

Signs it's a dead rodent

A dead rodent smell is different from a live infestation's musky odor. Look for:

  • A sharp, rotting smell that's strongest in one spot
  • Flies gathering at a window, light fixture or wall vent in one room
  • A stain spreading on the ceiling drywall
  • The smell getting worse when the attic heats up
  • Recent poison use, or noise that suddenly stopped

What a thorough job includes

Removal is only part of it. A complete job covers:

  • Tracing the smell to the right cavity or attic section
  • Removing the carcass with as little wall damage as possible
  • Bagging it and any soiled insulation or nest material
  • Disinfecting the spot
  • Odor treatment if the smell lingers
  • Finding out why it was there, and whether more rodents are inside

Something in the attic or the garage?

Step by step

The technician starts by narrowing down the spot: which room, which wall, high or low. Flies and stains help. In the attic, they look along the runways and in the insulation near where the smell is strongest. In a wall, they may use a small inspection hole or work from an outlet, a vent or the attic above.

Once the carcass is out, the area gets sprayed with disinfectant, and soiled insulation is bagged. If the rodent died because of poison someone else set, the technician may suggest removing the bait and switching to traps. Then the question is how it got in. A dead rat in the attic usually means the attic still has a way in, so entry point sealing often follows.

Why Plano attics make it worse

Plano attics get very hot from June through September, and heat speeds up decay. The smell rises into the attic and then drops through can lights, bath fans and return air grilles. Deep blown-in insulation can hide a carcass a few feet from the hatch. And houses with several attic sections over the garage and porch may need the technician to search more than one space.

If you find it yourself

Wear gloves. Spray the carcass and the area with a disinfectant or a bleach solution until it's soaked, let it sit about five minutes, then pick it up with a plastic bag turned inside out and seal it. Bag it again and put it in the trash cart. Clean the spot, then wash your hands. That follows the CDC's general guidance on handling rodents and their waste. The dead rodent smell article has more on odor.

Questions to ask when you call

Dead rodent calls are hard to quote until someone finds the carcass. Ask these up front so there are no surprises:

  • How do you find the spot, and what happens if you can't?
  • If you have to open drywall, how big a hole, and who patches it?
  • Is odor treatment part of the price?
  • Will you check whether more rodents are still in the house?

Preventing the next one

Most dead rodents in walls trace back to poison used indoors or in the attic. If you or a past company put out bait inside, ask the technician to remove it and switch to traps. Then close the gaps so live rodents can't get back in.

Common questions

How long will the smell last if I leave it?

It depends on the size of the animal and the heat. A mouse may fade in a week or two; a rat in a hot attic can last longer.

Will they have to cut my drywall?

Sometimes, if the carcass is deep in a wall. A good technician tries outlets, vents and the attic first and keeps any hole small.

Why did it die in the wall?

Often because of poison. Rodents don't always leave the house to die after eating bait.

Do air fresheners help?

They mask it for a while. The smell goes away when the source is removed or fully dries out.

Can a dead rodent make my pets sick?

If a pet finds a poisoned rodent and eats it, yes. Call your vet if you think that happened.

Are the flies dangerous?

Flies that hatch from a carcass are a nuisance and can carry germs onto surfaces. Once the carcass is out, they stop coming. Vacuum up the dead ones and wipe the window sills.
