Rodent control in Downtown Plano

Historic brick storefronts and a brick-paved street on 15th Street in Downtown Plano
15th Street in Downtown Plano. Old storefronts, shared alleys and restaurants side by side.

Downtown Plano is the oldest part of the city. The Downtown Plano Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and 15th Street still has its brick storefronts. Haggard Park, on land donated to the city in 1928, sits beside the Interurban Railway Museum, which the city restored and opened in 1988. The Saigling House on East 16th Street dates from 1906.

The neighborhood has changed a lot since the DART Downtown Plano Station opened on the Red Line in 2002. Eastside Village, finished in 2001, was downtown's first multifamily project, and apartments and townhomes have kept coming since. So downtown mixes century-old buildings, small houses on the side streets and new mid-rise apartments, all within a few blocks.

Restaurants and shared alleys

Downtown's restaurants and bars share walls, alleys and dumpster corrals. That brings Norway rats to the alleys at night, and roof rats into the older buildings through the roofline. Business owners should look at restaurant rodent control and ask how the provider handles a shared wall with the tenant next door.

Old houses on the side streets

The older houses near Haggard Park and along the lettered avenues have wood siding, deep porches and, in some cases, pier-and-beam floors. Gaps open up where the porch roof meets the house, where siding has shrunk and around crawl space vents. Mice get under the floor and into the walls from there. A rodent inspection should include a look under the house.

New apartments and townhomes

Newer buildings near the station have trash rooms and ground-floor retail. Renters should report droppings to the office in writing; the tenant and landlord guide explains why. Townhome owners can call about their own unit.

Repairs that suit an old house

Owners of historic houses often want rodent repairs that don't show. Ask the technician to tuck hardware cloth behind trim and lattice instead of on top of it, to paint any visible mesh to match, and to use copper mesh where steel would rust and stain the paint. Crawl space vents can get new screens without changing how they look from the street.

Questions from this part of town

Are historic homes harder to seal?

They can take more care. Wood siding, old trim and crawl spaces have more joints than a brick slab house, and some owners want repairs that match the original materials.

Rats are in the alley behind our shop. Who handles that?

Each business handles its own space, and the landlord usually handles the building. Talk to your neighbors and landlord about using one provider for the shared areas.

I rent near the DART station. What should I do first?

Tell the leasing office in writing and keep a copy. Seal food in hard containers in the meantime.
