Rodent control in West Plano

A lot of West Plano went up during the city's big growth years. Brick two-stories on curving streets off Preston Rd. and Parker Rd. are typical, many with a pool out back and a garage facing the alley. The trees planted when those houses were new are now big enough to hang over the roofs, and that's the path roof rats use.

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve covers about 200 acres on W. Parker Rd., and creek greenbelts run through this side of town. Houses that back onto them see field mice in the garage each fall and the occasional rat along the back fence.

Two-story rooflines

A West Plano two-story usually has a lot of roof: a main roof, a garage roof, maybe a porch roof, all meeting at different heights. Every place a lower eave dies into a wall is a possible gap, and roof rats find them. If you're hearing noise over the game room or the bonus room above the garage, that's the usual spot. See roof rat control and entry point sealing.

Greenbelt lots

Backing onto open space is nice for the view and hard on the garage. Field mice live in the tall grass along the trails, and when it cools off in October they try the nearest building. Keep the grass seed in a bin with a lid and replace a worn garage door seal before the first cold front. The fall checklist has the rest.

Pool equipment and hail roofs

Pool pump pads tucked behind shrubs along the fence give rats a warm, sheltered spot near water. Keep the shrubs trimmed back so you can see the pad. West Plano also gets its share of hail, and a lot of these houses have had at least one replacement roof. Ask the technician to check the vents and drip edge on a newer roof, since gaps sometimes get left where new flashing meets old trim.

Questions from this part of town

Why roof rats in a newer part of town?

The houses aren't that new anymore, and the trees have grown. Branches over the roof are all a roof rat needs.

We back onto Arbor Hills. Should we expect mice every fall?

Some pressure every fall is normal on a greenbelt lot. A tight garage door seal and covered weep holes keep most of it outside.

Can rats nest near the pool equipment?

Yes. Pump pads behind dense shrubs are a favorite spot. Trim the shrubs back and look for burrows next to the pad.
