Rodent control in The Colony, Texas
The Colony started as a planned housing development. Dallas builder Fox and Jacobs bought about 2,500 acres on Lewisville Lake's eastern shore in 1973, the first families moved in during October 1974, and residents voted to incorporate in January 1977. The lakeside community of Eastvale, founded in the early 1960s, joined the city in 1987.
That means a big share of The Colony's houses date from the mid 1970s on, many of them tract homes built in volume. Add a long lake shoreline and parkland, and you get steady rodent pressure from the edges.
Fifty-year-old tract homes
The first neighborhoods are now about fifty years old. Original garage doors, aging soffits and attic vents with old screen are common, along with trees that now reach over the roof. Those are the gaps mice and roof rats use. Entry point sealing on a house this age usually covers the garage, the soffits and every vent.
Lakeshore and parkland
Lewisville Lake's shoreline and the parks along it give Norway rats water and soft banks, and field mice live in the tall grass. Homes near the shore and the parks see more of both, especially when lake levels rise after heavy rain and push rodents to higher ground. Keep firewood and boat gear off the ground, and check sheds for burrows. See Norway rat control.

Boats, RVs and stored vehicles
Lake living means boats, trailers and campers that sit for weeks. Mice nest in boat cushions, engine compartments and RV storage bays, and can chew wiring. Check stored vehicles every couple of weeks, keep food out of them and set traps nearby. The rodents in the car article covers what to look for.
Neighbors and shared fences
Tract neighborhoods put houses close together, so rodents move along shared fences from yard to yard. Talk to neighbors about woodpiles and open compost.

Questions from this part of town
Do lakeside homes get more rats?
Often. Water and open banks support Norway rats, and rising lake levels can push them toward houses.
Mice got into our boat. What now?
Remove nests and droppings with gloves and disinfectant, check the wiring and cushions, and store the boat away from feed and cover.
