Rodent control in East Plano

East of US 75 is where Plano first grew beyond its old downtown. A lot of the houses here date from the 1960s and 1970s, when Plano was still a small town getting its first big subdivisions: one-story brick ranches on wide lots with mature pecans and oaks.

Farther east, Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve covers around 800 acres and ties by trail to Bob Woodruff Park along Rowlett Creek. That much open land next to neighborhoods means steady rodent pressure along the edges.

Older houses, older gaps

Houses from the 1960s and 1970s have had fifty-plus Texas summers to dry out door seals and crack caulk. Weep holes, AC line entries and garage door seals are the common spots. Additions and garage conversions built decades after the original house often leave a seam where the two roofs meet. Mouse control and entry point sealing cover both.

Some of the oldest houses sit on pier and beam with a crawl space underneath. Mice and rats get under through loose vent screens and gaps in the skirting, so a technician should look under the house as well as in the attic.

The Oak Point and Rowlett Creek edge

Yards that back onto the preserve or the creek trail see field mice, Norway rats and the occasional cotton rat. Norway rats dig along the back fence and under sheds. Watch for round holes with loose dirt in front and a worn path through the grass. Rat burrow treatment explains what a technician does about them.

Big pecans

Old pecan trees are part of what makes these streets feel settled. They also drop nuts that rats eat all fall, and their limbs reach over the roof. Pick up fallen pecans and have branches cut back from the shingles. If you find pecans with the insides chewed out in the attic, that's a roof rat stash.

Questions from this part of town

My house has a crawl space. Is that different?

Yes. The technician will check the vents and skirting and look under the house for droppings and burrows.

Do cotton rats get into houses?

Usually they stay in the grass, but they'll use a garage or shed near open land. The CDC lists the cotton rat among the rodents that can carry hantavirus, so wet down droppings before cleaning.

Are pecans really a rat problem?

They're good rat food. Picking them up every few days during the fall drop helps.
