Rodent control in Los Rios, Plano
Los Rios is in East Plano, in the 75074 ZIP. For years the neighborhood was built around the Los Rios golf course. The city bought that land in 2014 to turn it into parkland, so a lot of houses here back onto open green space instead of fairways.
Open ground next to houses is great for walks. It also means field mice and Norway rats living right at the back fence.
Backing onto open ground
When the grass browns out in fall, field mice look for the nearest warm building, and that's often a garage on the park side. Norway rats dig along the fence line and under sheds. Watch for round holes with loose dirt in front of them and a worn path through the grass. See Norway rat control for what a technician does about burrows.
Established homes
The houses here have been around long enough for seals and caulk to wear out and trees to reach the roof. Expect a technician to look at garage door seals, AC line entries, weep holes and any branches over the roof. A rodent inspection is a good first step if you're not sure what you have.

Water and drainage
Drainage swales and low spots near the old course hold water after a storm. Rats need water, and standing water close to the fence makes a back yard more appealing. Fix leaky hose bibs and drip lines, empty buckets and plant saucers, and don't leave pet water bowls out overnight. The trash and yard rules guide covers what the city expects on the yard side.
Leaf and brush piles
Fall leaves raked into a pile against the back fence, or a brush pile waiting for bulky pickup, make good winter cover for mice right next to the garage. Bag leaves or move piles away from the house, and set brush out for collection instead of letting it sit for weeks.

Questions from this part of town
Will the park bring more rodents?
Open land always holds some. Keeping your garage sealed and your yard free of food matters more than what's behind the fence.
Should I report rats in the park?
If you see heavy activity on public land, the Plano reporting guide explains how to file a Fix It Plano request.
Do field mice carry disease?
Some do. Wet droppings with disinfectant before cleaning them up, and don't sweep them dry.
