Rodent control in Allen, Texas

Allen sits just north of Plano, with US 75 running through the middle of town and Rowlett Creek flowing through on its way south. Allen had about 18,000 people in 1990 and more than 104,000 by 2020, so most of its houses are newer than Plano's.

The rodent problems follow the age of the house. Roof rats show up on the older streets where the trees have grown tall, and mice show up in garages near open ground and new construction.

Newer houses still get mice

Newer doesn't mean sealed. Builders leave gaps around AC lines and at garage door corners, and nobody puts covers on the weep holes. If a field or a construction site backs up to your fence, field mice will try the garage when it gets cold. See mouse control.

Roof rats on established streets

Allen's older streets, around the original townsite and along Cottonwood Creek, have trees tall enough to reach the roof. That's where roof rat control comes in. The roof rat vs. mouse guide can help you figure out which one you've got.

Creek corridors

Rowlett Creek and its tributaries run through Allen's parks and greenbelts, and the trails along them connect to Plano's. Norway rats live along those banks. Homes that back onto a creek trail should check the fence line for burrows every few months and keep compost bins closed. Rat burrow treatment covers what to do if you find holes.

Allen's code rules are its own, separate from Plano's. If you need to report a neighboring property, use the City of Allen's own request system rather than Fix It Plano.

Questions Allen homeowners ask

Most Allen calls start with one of two things: scratching in the bonus room wall of a newer house, or running overhead on an older street with big trees. The first is usually mice coming up from the garage, and the second is usually roof rats coming in from the canopy. A rodent inspection tells you which.

Questions from this part of town

Does this cover all of Allen?

Yes. Call and give your ZIP code, and your call goes to a provider that works there.

Our house is only a few years old. Why do we have mice?

New houses have gaps too, especially around AC lines, garage door corners and open weep holes. Construction next door also pushes mice out of the fields.

Do Allen homes get roof rats?

Yes, mostly on the older streets with tall trees. Newer areas see more mice.
